Stage 2 LRT expansion in Ottawa is in full swing, expanding further East, West and South. One of the most exciting elements of Stage 2 is the new rolling stock for O-Train Line 2, the Stadler FLIRT (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train).
The official unveiling and first close-up look took place on July 15th, 2022, at the new Walkley Yard MSF (Maintenance and Storage Facility). Join us as we take a look at the exterior, interior, while getting an overview of this exciting new train from the experts.
Built in Switzerland, the Stadler FLIRT is an established and well traveled model of train, with a proven track record and operated in over 20 countries. O-Train Line 2 has received 7 of these new trains for the expanded line. Featuring a length of 80m (double that of the previous Alstom Coradia LINT), and powered by a unique diesel electric powerpack, these trains are sure to turn heads with their comfort, quiet and smooth operation and high quality.
This afternoon they trucked the Stadler FLIRT modules up from Greeley storage and assembled them into trainset C12. Here they are lifting the center power module from the heavy load truck, between the other modules.
2 outside modules at east end. And Trackmobile to maneuver into position. Six on order, C10 and C11 assembled. C1 to C3 scrapped Talents (20 yrs old), C4 to C9 Coradia LINT, 2 will serve airport spur, others double coupled for mainline.

Several DEMU Stadler FLIRT modules were found secure at a private lot South of Ottawa, awaiting further easy assembly.
Some assembly required. Here is a set of Stadler bogies, in foreground, to be placed under body modules like on the truck this morning.
The first new Trillium Line Stage 2 Stadler FLIRT DMU. To the left the venerable surplus Bombardier Talent you could have 3 of for almost free. Note the middle diesel power module that could be swapped for electric pantograph ops. Maybe battery supplement when available.
The following pictures were taken of the first Stadler FLIRT train C10 to arrive at Walkley Yard MSF, O-Train Line 2's Maintenance and Storage Facility. In total, there will be 7 Stadler FLIRT trains in the newly expanded fleet. The train set is made up of 5 modules, two end units, two middle units, and one power pack. At the time of visit, only the two end units and one middle unit had not yet made their way onto the MSF. The train units were still loaded on the flatbed trucks and staged outside the facility on Albion Road North. As they arrived by truck, the rail bogies are presently not installed, and as a result, are not seen in these pictures.
I hope you enjoy this real first look at the exterior of these new exciting trains to be used on the expanded O-Train Line 2 (Trillium Line).
Please note, these Stadler FLIRT trains will be used on O-Train Line 2 (Trillium Line). They should not to be confused with O-Train Line 1 (Confederation Line), which uses Alstom Citadis Spirit trains.
The new Stadler FLIRT train travelled by truck from the Stadler Rail facility in Bussnang, Switzerland to the port of Antwerp in Belgium. It then travelled by boat across the Atlantic Ocean to the port of Newark in New Jersey and by truck to the USA/Canada border at Ogdensburg, New York and Johnstown, Ontario. Once in Canada, the train travelled along Highway 416 and into Ottawa to its final destination at Walkley Yard. In total, the first Stadler FLIRT train has travelled approximately 7,000 kilometres, and crossed numerous countries and states, including Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York!

This train is the first to arrive of the seven train sets ordered and manufactured at the Stadler plant in Switzerland.
The new Stadler trains for the O-Train Trillium Line will arrive in Ottawa from Switzerland this fall!
